I-10 Calcasieu River Bridge
The P3 of this section of Interstate 10 (I-10) in Louisiana, as it passes through the Calcasieu River, is a major road project that will substantially improve connectivity between the cities of Lake Charles and West Lake, located in the southwestern part of the state, near the Texas border.
Sacyr Concesiones will lead the design, construction, finance, operation, and maintenance of a highway’s section of approximately 9 kilometers for 50 years, together with Acciona and Plenary Americas, as Calcasieu Bridge Parners (CBP).
What’s more, the project includes the construction of a new bridge on the Calcasieu River to replace the existing one, which is more than 70 years old and has a considerable slope. The construction of the bridge will be developed by a 50:50 joint venture between Sacyr and Acciona. Construction works are expected to begin in 2026 and the operation in 2031. It will feature four lanes in each direction, doubling the capacity of the current bridge, while its height and slope will be lower.
It is the largest infrastructure project in the history of Louisiana and includes the installation of an innovative toll system that is key to its financing. In this case, they will be free-flow tolls, whose fees will be indexed to inflation, so that the State of Louisiana will receive 15% of the future dividends once the asset is open to traffic. Its financing method has included the issuance of tax-exempt bonds, called Private Activity Bonds (PBAs), and has already won several awards.
With this P3 asset, one of the largest 2023 contract awarded in North America, Sacyr consolidates its position among the world's leading infrastructure developers. The project has achieved the largest transportation infrastructure project finance in North America in 2024. We will strengthen a key link between the Florida and California coasts, which will increase traffic capacity and safety by serving more than 90,000 vehicles daily by 2040.
